Mr Cussen's account of the Naughton Scholarship

Last year, I met with all 6th Year students regarding the application process for the Naughton Scholarship. We discussed the application process and used this meeting as an opportunity to note which students were interested in undertaking the process.

The Naughton Foundation is a private family foundation. In 2008 "The Naughton Scholarship" was developed. This is a scholarship programme created to increase support for Leaving Certificate students who wish to undertake STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses at third level in Ireland and/or Northern Ireland. The scholarship is very prestigious and awards students up to €20,000 over the duration of the four years of their courses. A very limited number of students are selected each year for the scholarship. This is an extremely competitive application and thus, it was essential that students were given support and resources to create the best application possible with an aim of securing a place on the programme. The application focuses on the holistic element of the student’s progression in school and outside of school. Students discuss both their academic and extra-curricular involvement with the school and wider community.
Additionally, they must outline their rationale for course they are applying for and their ‘10-year plan/vision'. Finally, students need to explain how they feel the scholarship will benefit them. Several students undertook the process of completing the application last year.
We were delighted to hear the great news that Ciara Kernan was successful in the application. Ciara put in a lot of effort in completing the application. She engaged in a wide range of extra-curricular both in school and in the wider community. As a result of the successful application, we have been granted €1000 in funding for the Science Department. I will be meeting with current 6th years again this year to begin the process again with the hopes of adding to our existing successful applicants (Molly Gray 2017 and Ciara Kernan 2021)

Third Year students began the first full week of the new term with a study skills workshop delivered by Inspire Education. Students received tips and insights on how best to study and to prepare for upcoming examinations.
Today, January 6th, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. On this special feast day we pray:
