1st Year SPHE Programme

Information on the 1st year SPHE Programme.

1st Year Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE)

2020 – 2021

Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) is one of the core areas of Wellbeing.

Wellbeing in junior cycle is about young people feeling confident, happy, healthy ad connected. SPHE provides learning opportunities which will help to develop these attributes.

The subject is comprised of four strands, each one focusing on learning in different but related areas of Social, Personal and Health Education:

  1. Who am I? This focuses on self-awareness and building self-esteem
  2. Minding myself and others. This gives students an opportunity to reflect on how they can best take care of themselves and others
  3. Team up. This allows students to learn about important relationships in their lives and building relationship skills
  4. My mental health. This focuses on positive mental health, gets students to examine young people’s experiences of metal ill-health and learn how to support themselves and others in challenging times.

The study of SPHE at junior cycle aims to:

  • enable the students to develop personal and social skills
  • promote self-esteem and self-confidence
  • enable the students to develop a framework for responsible decision making
  • provide opportunities for reflection and discussion
  • promote physical, mental and emotional health and well being

At Junior Cycle, students use the textbook ‘My Life’ by Stephanie Mangan, which is supplemented by a variety of resources.
